“It is observed that in any great endeavor, it is not enough for a person to depend solely on himself.” ~ Lakota Proverb

They called it a terrible glory and the last great battle for the American West. The battle of Little Big Horn was the last stand by Commander George Armstrong Custer against the Lakota tribes, but to Lily James it was the last stand between her old life and her new life.

After her in-laws swindle away the family fortune, Lily and her husband, Alfred, head out west into the frontier plains of South Dakota to the only land available to poor people and far away from the debts they can’t pay. When a band of Lakota warriors attacks their wagon train, her husband is murdered and Lily is taken captive.

Widowed Lakota warrior Tahatan has vowed never to take another bride. However, when the Great Spirit shows him a vision, he finds himself forced into a marriage with the outspoken, yellow-haired Yankee woman captured at the hands of his people.

With Custer’s sights set, not only on the gold hidden in the depths of the Black Hills Mountains, but on Lily too, the Commander begins his warpath along the tribe villages. In order to protect the woman he’s falling in love with, Tahatan must face the demons of his past. Can Lily overcome hers to defend Tahatan in return? Or will she betray him and his people for the actions against her dead husband?
